There are lots of dental health issues that may require emergency dental treatment in La Jolla from Dr. Englund. Here are a few of the most common types of dental emergencies:

  • A severe toothache that lasts more than a day or two, which may indicate a tooth infection
  • Serious cuts and bleeding from the lips, tongue, cheeks, or gums
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Objects stuck between teeth and/or gums
  • Lost and pulled-out dental work (crowns, fillings, etc.)
  • Loose or knocked-out teeth

Don’t see your issue on this list? Not sure if you need emergency care? Call Englund Dental to speak with one of our team members and get the guidance you need.

Don’t Wait – The Importance of Immediate Care

The sooner you get emergency dental care, the sooner you’ll get out of pain and be able to resume your normal routine. Seeing an emergency dentist like Dr. Englund right away can also help you save time and money. By getting immediate care, you can prevent complications like infections, save your tooth, and eliminate the need for more complex treatment in the future.

What To Do in an Emergency – A Step-By-Step Guide

Not sure what to do during a dental emergency? Whether you’re experiencing one now or you just want to know what to do in the future, here are five steps to follow:

1. Call Englund Dental

The first thing you should do is call our team and let us know about your situation. We offer same-day emergency dental care for our patients and will do our best to fit you in as soon as possible.

2. Recover tooth or dental work (if necessary)

If you’ve knocked out a tooth, retrieve it and rinse it off with warm water. Grab it by the top (crown), not the bottom (root). You can put it back into the socket to keep it moist or put it in a small plastic container filled with milk. You need to see Dr. Englund within 1-2 hours at most to save your tooth.

If you’ve lost a crown or another piece of dental work, you can put it into a plastic bag and bring it with you to our office. In some cases, Dr. Englund may be able to replace it, which will simplify your treatment.

3. Deal with any bleeding

If your mouth is bleeding, use clean gauze or paper towels to apply pressure to the area and absorb blood. Bleeding should slow down within 5-10 minutes.

4. Treat pain and discomfort

You can take over-the-counter medicine like naproxen or ibuprofen to help with your pain. If you have a toothache, topical treatments like Orajel may help with the pain until you can see a dentist. Applying an ice pack to the cheek near the affected area can also help with pain and swelling.

5. Come to our office ASAP

All of the above steps are only temporary fixes. For a permanent solution to your emergency, you need to come into Englund Dental as scheduled. Dr. Englund will diagnose your issue, get you out of pain, and provide the expert dental care you need to restore your smile.

How To Avoid Dental Emergencies – Our Top Tips

Many dental emergencies are accidents, so they can’t always be avoided. Still, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of experiencing an emergency:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene – Proper brushing and flossing prevent cavities, gum disease, and tooth infections that can cause toothaches.
  • Invest in a sports mouthguard – Mouthguards reduce your risk of tooth damage by cushioning your teeth and spreading out the impact if you’re hit in the mouth.
  • Avoid chewing extremely hard foods, especially with front teeth – This includes things like ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candies.
  • Don’t chew non-food objects or use teeth as tools – Don’t chew your nails, pens, or pencils. Never use your teeth to do things like rip tape or open packages.
