Restore Your Smile in One Visit

Whether you have a failing filling, an old crown, or a tooth that’s damaged and needs repair, Dr. Bethany Englund is here to help with same-day CEREC crowns in La Jolla. With CEREC, our team can design, craft, and place a crown in just one visit to Englund Dental. Book your appointment today and enjoy a better way to restore your smile and your oral health!

What Are CEREC Crowns?

A crown is a hollow, false tooth that’s designed to “cap” and cover a damaged tooth. It covers the entire tooth all the way down to the gum line, providing maximum protection. Crowns are typically the best option for restoring a tooth that’s been severely damaged by decay or trauma. They are also a good option for covering up and protecting teeth after root canal therapy.

With CEREC technology, Dr. Englund can fit you for a crown, design it, and then craft it at our office in just one visit. Instead of an outside dental lab building your crown, which can take up to 2-3 weeks, we use an advanced CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing) machine to carve it out of a solid block of porcelain in just a few minutes.

The Benefits of CEREC Technology

Why should you opt for a CEREC crown instead of a lab-made crown? Here’s a quick look at the benefits of same-day crowns:

  • Avoid gag-inducing impressions – In CEREC, a special 3D scanner is used to take a digital “impression” of your teeth. There’s no need to bite down on putty-filled dental trays, which many patients find uncomfortable.
  • No temporary crown necessary – Since you can get your new tooth right away, there’s no need to wear a temporary resin crown. Temporary crowns require special care and can come loose, making them uncomfortable and inconvenient.
  • Fits into your busy schedule – Traditional crowns require at least two visits over a period of several weeks. In contrast, CEREC takes just a single 1-2 hour appointment at Englund Dental.
  • Natural results – Dr. Englund is an expert in digital smile design. She uses the latest techniques and lifelike ceramic materials to create a CEREC crown that will look, feel, and function just like a “real” tooth.
  • Long-lasting treatment – CEREC crowns last just as long as lab-made crowns with a typical lifespan of 10-15 years. With proper care, your new tooth could last 20+ years.

The Same-Day Crown Process – What to Expect

1. Preparing your tooth

First, Dr. Englund will clean and numb your mouth. Then, she will use a dental drill to remove any damaged or decayed enamel from your tooth. If necessary, she will also reshape the tooth to create a stable platform for your new crown.

2. 3D tooth scan

After prepping your tooth, Dr. Englund will use a handheld scanner to take a 3D scan of your smile. It only takes a few minutes to scan your mouth and upload the 3D image into a computer. No messy putty or gag-inducing trays are required!

3. Crown design

Once she has loaded your 3D scan into the computer, Dr. Englund will use a software program to design your CEREC crown. She will make sure it’s the right shape and size to fit into your smile perfectly. When she’s satisfied with your crown design, she will upload it to our CEREC machine.

4. Crafting your CEREC crown

Next, Dr. Englund will choose a small porcelain block that matches your teeth perfectly. She will insert it into our CEREC machine, and then start it up. The CEREC machine will use Dr. Englund’s design and a powerful 3D milling system to carve your new crown out of the porcelain block. This usually takes 15-20 minutes.

5. Final checks and placement

Once your crown is finished, Dr. Englund will remove it from the CEREC machine and bring it back to the operating room. She will check it to make sure it fits perfectly, and make any last-minute adjustments if needed. Then, she will bond it to your tooth permanently with dental cement. After a final polishing, you’ll be sent home to enjoy your brilliant new smile!
